The elephant in the room

How can you tell when there's an elephant in the fridge? Footprints in the butter. Hardy har har. But whilst the presence of a huge afrotherian mammal in the family Zanussi might actually start a few conversations (such as 'Is this who's been drinking the orange juice?'), the proverbial elephant in the room is more likely to have people shuffling nervously and looking at their feet, muttering 'Don't know, sir'.

Every industry has its elephants in the room and for L&D leaders, it's something of a mammoth: the lack of learning transfer. Sending employees on training courses is a little like feeding buns to the proverbial pachyderm: high in cost and low on results. Simply put, attending training courses won’t automatically result in people developing new skills or changing behaviour. Until they put what they’ve been taught into practice, neither they nor their organisation will benefit from the investment.

With the global learning market worth over £200 billion, that equates to some very expensive buns. Knowledge might be power – but to be effective, that power needs to be used.
